Children’s Oral Health Facts and Tips for Parents
A good set of teeth not only enhances your beautiful smile and improves confidence, but is also important for good speech and pronunciation. Ensuring your children have healthy teeth is also important for their smooth and proper digestion as well as great health. Taking care of your child’s oral health from an early age is very important, but we know it isn’t easy getting your child to visit a dentist. We, at Sundance Dental Clinic, make dental care and good oral health a breeze for your child and you as a parent. Forget all your worries about finding a good kids’ dentist and make your way to our clinic for your child's oral health troubles.
Infants, toddlers, young children and adolescents have different dental problems, and only a professional pediatric dentist can diagnose and treat those problems. As a parent, you have to ensure that you help your child develop the right habits to maintain a good dental hygiene as a bad one can cause many other severe disorders too.
Some facts and tips to take care of your children’s oral health are:
- Brushing teeth twice daily is a must
Make it a rule for your children to brush teeth twice daily - once in the morning and once at bedtime. This habit is imperative if you want to avoid multiple visits to the kids’ dentist. For infants and toddlers, you could use a wet, clean cloth to clean the inside of their mouths. Do not forget to clean the tongue too. For children aged one year and above, a baby toothbrush without any toothpaste is good, as they cannot spit the toothpaste out. You will need to teach your child to move the toothbrush on teeth, gums and tongue, and later to spread toothpaste similarly. Please assist your children for as long as they need your help.
- The two-minute rule
Please ensure that your children brush their teeth for at least two minutes. Maybe play a song they enjoy that lasts for two minutes and make them brush until the song is over. You could also keep a timer for kids that are probably too old for this.
- Make rewards healthy
Parents often reward children for the smallest achievements and this is great because it keeps children motivated to do better. However, refrain from giving them sugary treats as rewards and opt for healthier treats, like fruits or nuts. Or you could give stars for every achievement, and encourage your child to accumulate more stars that can be traded for a good book or a trip to the mall.
